Mentoring opportunities

One employer mentor for every student – can you help?
Our ambition is to provide one mentor from across the Design, Build and Innovate industry for every student. Mentors will be volunteers and must have the support of their employer.

What is the level of commitment required?
The commitment lasts for between two to four years, depending on if the student goes on to post-16 education and both parties wish it to continue. The mentor and student will meet twice a year at West Midlands UTC (WMUTC) or the employer’s premises, with web-based contact during the rest of the year.

What benefits are there for the mentors?
WMUTC mentors will receive training and be invited to networking events. Being a mentor can also develop coaching skills and contribute to the Continuing Professional Development expected by professional bodies.

What kind of mentors are we looking for?
Mentors can be from any part of the construction sector, including:

  • advanced or higher apprentices
  • graduates or management trainees
  • professional body members or those working towards professional registration
  • office as well as site-based staff
  • construction and STEM ambassadors
  • those with an IT background as well as construction.

Mentors need to be people who are:

  • interested in helping young people succeed
  • able to commit the time
  • enthusiastic about what they do
  • reliable, honest, and trustworthy
  • capable of active listening and empathy
  • able to pass on their knowledge and expertise clearly, positively and helpfully
  • able to develop a suitable project.
