A Day in the life of the West Midlands UTC…

We have so many exciting things that take place at the UTC. This might involve employer led projects, enrichment activities, trips, science experiments, master classes and so much more. I thought it would be nice to share with you the activities that took place last Thursday.

Though not quite a typical day it gives you a feel of what makes the UTC so special. In fact one of our visitors on Thursday described the UTC as ‘Wolverhampton’s best kept secret’. I should say I do not want it to be a secret, please get the word out there, do tell your community about all the fantastic things that we are offering our learners!

Thursday kicked off at 7:30 am with an employer’s breakfast meeting. We were proud to welcome the West Midlands Mayor, Andy Street as our guest speaker. Andy was blown away by the positive learning environment. The event was arranged to get together many business leaders from the region to discuss the ‘Construction of Excellence’ initiative which aims to improve the employment offer from within the industry across the West Midlands.

Next at 11:00 am during PSHE we ran an event called ‘My Career Story’. Current apprentices and construction workers were on site to support students for their next steps beyond school. We were happy to welcome ex-student Ben Harris who was one of the presenters and was keen to share the benefits that he accrued from studying at the UTC

Throughout the afternoon we had over 20 employers and colleges on site supporting our ‘Apprenticeship and Careers Fair’.

“It was fantastic to speak to a number of students who have a drive to be a part of the construction industry and I will do my upmost to support them in their journey as there were some truly inspiring students.” Ashley Clark, Resourcing Manager, Galliford Try Partnerships

“I found several candidates that I want my senior management team to meet formally & am really excited about them.” Cliff Shepherd, Senior Project Engineer, RMD Kwikform

“My team have arrived at work today and reported how impressed they were with the event, but most importantly with the conduct and calibre of your students – a real credit to you.” Jo Baugh, Sales Manager – Apprenticeships, City of Wolverhampton College

Well there you go. I’m sure you will agree that ‘A day in the life of the UTC’ demonstrates that we really are ‘a school with a difference’. A massive thank-you to our highly skilled and dedicated staff who helped arrange these inspiring activities.
